Kaiju No. 8 Synopsis
First Impressions on Kaiju No. 8
FIrst of all, the art and animation looks great. The 3D camera movement along with the ongoing action looks amazing. The accompanying sound and OST are great too and indicates this is an action anime. The funny facial expressions and light humor goes a long way in this world which is unforgiving and certain scenes alludes to that.
I like how subtly it introduces to different elements and builds up the world little by little. Such as how the Defence Force is praised while nobody gives a damn about the Sweepers who spend multiple days cleaning after a fight, different corporations in play & controling the monopoly, the existance of different types of kaiju, the overlooming mystery, etc. These are all in the subtext instead of in an exposition which is really boring.
Most improtantly, it focues mainly on the characters. I love that they are not annoyingly sprouting their ideals about never giving up or killing all the kaiju. These moments are delivered by with the right timing. Like how Kafka remenace the day when he said he would join the defence force with Mina after passing by her and seeing how determined his 18 year old collegue is, his life flashing before his eyes when he gets in the life threatening danger, and Mina remenacing the old days after seeing Kafka again.
Such informations about the chatacters are filled in but inline with the plot; unlike some anime/manga where the characters and the plot are explained seperately. You can tell the writing is welldone. It’s a story about a man who have failed and in his 30s now. He is going through a mental crisis and wants to get back up again. It’s an uplifting story that involves friendship, teamwork, promises and determination.
After Though
Kaiju No. 8 shows a great potential and I hope Production I.G can uphold that. The manga is highly praised and that can be translated into the anime in a more fulfilling way. If you are still wondering about this show, it’s kind of like Attack on Titan but without the edgyness. We’ve got 2 orphans instead of 3, lost their hometown, determine to kill the kaiju, but the twist is that only Mikasa makes it into the corp and Eren gets sidelined. Then Eren or Kafka in this case, climbs back up again in this world.
