First Impressions on Spice and Wolf 2024

Posted on

Spice and Wolf is back with a fresh start. Honestly, a sequel to 2008’s series would have been fine, but oh well. It’s sort of welcoming for the newcomers to the series. It’s titled Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. I hope it explores more aspects as well as bring back the magic the original had. But to that, a few things have to be said.

Spice and Wolf 2024 is nothing like the Original

First of all, they nailed the aesthetic. The visuals, voice acting, soundtrack, I loved all of them. The overall direction is great but the pacing of the first episode felt a bit meh. It’s as if it’s missing something that the original had. It’s as if it’s trying to be like the original instead of bringing out its own intricacies. So, for this first episode, I prefer 2008‘s one. Studio Passione is animating this, which I wish they stayed away from one of my beloved stories, ‘cuz they are an abomination of an animation studio. Though, they promised they’d follow the original novel and make the adaptation as close to it as possible. But we know it takes more than that to make a good adaptation.

Thoughts on the Opening and Ending

The Opening is sort of a laidback. While it looks great and the song is nice, it fells in comparison to the original. The original Opening had so many layers and mysteries sneakily put together that if you analyze it, you will spoil the whole story but learn so much about the main characters and the world they are in. It used a way of visual storytelling mixed with the lyrics of the song to convey its message that it would boggle your mind. It was such an awesome and thought-provoking Opening, now-a-days pretty much all the OPs & EDs are missing that charm. The ED is nice is BTW, it’s almost like the original capturing the storybook-like aspect and I like it.

Conclusion

Spice and Wolf 2024 is enjoyable to say the least. But given how much quality is put for this, the journey ahead might not be so bad. Kevin Penkin is handling the music and it was beautiful. I mostly compared it to the original which is a beloved classic, so apart from that, I think it’s a good one. We shall see as more episodes are yet to be released.
